Summer’s almost here! Spring lasted about one week this year, so we’re all ready for the beach. Light and breezy books are on display, along with an airy gazebo to relax in. Feel free to enjoy the friendly ambience and the terrific reading selections.

That’s exactly what happens in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. We have all three titles in the library and they are Hot! Read Twilight first – you’ll be hooked. New Moon and Eclipse are next. Thanksgiving has come and gone: lots of turkey and pumpkin pie. You’ll notice some changes the next time you see the library: The paperbacks are all in the pit, so that you can browse more comfortably, and the photocopier is now beside the computer lab. Hope you all had a great holiday weekend!

An action packed week ahead

Over the next two days, the library is hosting the IB Art Show. It is the culmination of 2 years work and is worth 70% of the final mark for IB Art students. Public viewing is this evening and independent judging occurs tomorrow.

Monday is Shakespeare’s birthday. We’ll have decorations and a huge slab cake to celebrate. There’s a catch – Quotes for cake, but it’s all great fun.

The Best of the Best Poetry Slam occurs on Friday April 27th. Each class will be represented by five students (50 students total). We’ll also have four guest speakers from outside the school. See you there!

Literature Circle

Some of Mrs. Evans grade 12 students read the Kite Runner as one of their selections and then videoconferenced with students at Rideau High School. Everyone had an enlightening and enjoyable time. We will do more videoconferencing soon.

New Teen books just arrived

This week we received 20 Young Adult books including the Book Thief by Markus Zusak about a girl who loves to steal books (don’t get any ideas lol), Avalon High by Meg Cabot for all you romantic types and The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Johathan Stroud, which comes highly recommended by fantasy fans and may also be appealing to the LOTR crowd. We’d also like to wish good luck to all the Grade 12 IB students taking oral English exams.

We just received books from the Everything series including College Survival, Online Auctions, Home Decorating, Etiquette, Cover Letters, and Writing Research papers. We also have the Fantasy series by David Edding called The Belgariad. Gordon Korman’s Son of the Mob is now in, for those of you who have been waiting for us to get the first book before reading the sequel, aptly named Son of the Mob 2. We have too many new teen books to list, so visit us and check them out.

I thought that the series The Ring was pretty good. It was scary in areas and very intense. It was the kind of book that you never wanted to put down, amazingly suspenseful. However, there were some things that I didn’t like about this series. Firstly, three different artists illustrate the series. Not only does this cause inconsistency in how the different characters are portrayed, but it also changes the story line. Also, the novel, The Ring, which this series and the movies are based on, is only looosely followed in the manga. Some of the artists even changed the genders of some of the characters. It was really confusing for me when the main character changed from a girl to a boy in Spiral. Another problem with the series is that it was difficult to figure out the order of the books, because the direction of the story would change when the artist changed. However, I did enjoy the series a lot. The inconsistencies are easy to overlook and the story shines through as being amazing, complex and creepy. I would recommend this novel, especially to people who want to know more about the original The Ring, and not just the remakes of it made recently. One word of advice though: don’t read these books at night unless you want to have trouble falling asleep!
